10—1
(Please turn up the volume on the YouTube video)
This was a one-off creative exercise to showcase some of my favorite photos and explore musical ideas after getting an OP-Z synth. Within a day of getting to know the device, it quickly became obvious that I needed some formal output—after all, I was having so much fun capturing the ideas it helped generate. During this period of life, I was also quite focused on adding rigor to creative projects by setting rules and goals. For this project they were:
Goals
- Practice “soundtrack” ideas
- Practice transitions between completely different songs/scenes
- Practice improvisation
Rules
- Metronome at 70 bpm
- Look at each picture for 60 seconds
- Use 60 seconds to develop the first idea for a rhythm, harmony, or melody, then build on it
- Spend no more than 10 minutes per idea to develop and record
Somewhat important note: I originally planned for exactly one minute per “song,” but I must have (yes, I did it!) set my markers incorrectly in Logic Pro—most clips ended up around 50 seconds instead. So 10—1 should be more like 10—0:50 🤷♂️
