Meta Quest Home

Quest Home is the first virtual space users see when they put on their headset. It evolved from a static virtual background into an interactive environment with augments, an avatar mirror for identity customization, and shared social experiences.

Role

Senior Product Designer (IC)

Challenge

Transform a passive virtual environment into an interactive spatial foundation that works across VR and mixed reality with multiple input methods.

Contribution

Led the vision for interactive Home, aligning with leadership across product, engineering, and design. Designed a framework for the augment interaction system including placement and manipulation. Led design for Avatar Mirror, First Encounters, and Horizon Portal augments.

Impact

Highlighted at Connect 2022. Avatar Mirror significantly increased Meta Avatar adoption and time spent in Home. First Encounters became a launch story for Quest 3, introducing users to mixed reality. Horizon Portal reduced friction for entering social experiences [1]. This work laid the foundation for the latest iteration shipped in 2025.

Horizon Portal — making augments work across virtual reality and mixed reality was the biggest challenge and presented many trade-offs in the user experience, like inconsistent manipulation affordances.
